As part of the city’s effort to save money on energy costs by closing many of its buildings for three consecutive days, the Danbury Library was asked to choose one day to close each week. Unlike City Hall and other city departments which are open only Monday through Friday, the library is open seven days a week for most of the school year, closing on Sunday only between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Choosing a day to close was not easy, but Friday makes sense for several reasons:
- It has our shortest weekday schedule, and closing time on Friday has always been 5:00 p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. as it is Monday through Thursday.
- Fewer students use the library after school on Friday than on any other school day.
- It mirrors the new schedule for City Hall, which will also be closed on Friday.
- Friday’s seven hours represent a reduction of only 12% in the library’s normal 58-hour weekly schedule, and the library will still be open 51 hours each week.
Due dates for checked-out items will be adjusted accordingly, and no items will be due on Fridays. For example, customers who borrow from the 1-day Express DVD collection will now be able to have one of those DVDs from Thursday through Saturday.
A decision will be made by the city administration and the Danbury Municipal Employees Association after March 14, 2009 about whether to continue the four-day work week schedule. Until that time, rest assured that the goal of the Danbury Library will remain to provide the best library service possible for the residents of our city.
